Last man standing.
Went to see Valentino: The Last Emperor, when the film festival was on, and it was surprisingly good, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. It was touching with unexpected moments of comedy. The film is less about his fashion, and more about the eccentric nature of Valentino and his relationship with Giancarlo Giammetti, his life partner. The film kinda sprung all over the place at times, and...

Really?
I have a few books about vintage advertising but they don’t contain anything as great as these. Honestly, the pig, his face, gets me every time. The aesthetic of the smoking one is actually quite cool, and a beautiful photo/illustration, once you look past the fact that it advises to woo a woman by blowing smoke up her nostrils.

Are you 'avin a laaf?
I have a soft spot for the Gaag’s (our affectionate name for Lady Gaga), I mean for christ sakes the woman wore a bra that shot firecrackers. I find these pretty funny, but I’ve also been painting my nails in my room all night so it could be the fumes (yes, it is a Friday night). Get your laugh on here www.blog.theblakewright.com via www.moonface.tumblr.com (see here also for lasagna...

Sheer Naughtyness
Spotted a teeny tiny thumbnail of this under garment lovelyness a while ago, and always meant to look it up, and Viva reminded me again with a little piece on the team from Lonely Hearts. This kind of underwear is such a refreshing change from what is normally available, and I’ve always had a thing for this kind of colour and lace. I’m not sure it’s totally wearable everyday, but...

an exception
I normally really don’t like faux polaroids, but this doodacky application is fun to use and produces some pretty awesome results. And each result is slightly different than the last, just like an actual polaroid, so that’s nice. Download it here www.poladroid.net I took these photos from the steps where I sit behind my work, it’s a weird little spot, so much construction going...

finger's in pies
Presenting Anne Baynham at Fingers Gallery! I missed the Monday night opening show, but popped into town yesterday to see her work, and had a chat to the lady at the gallery too, Anne has already sold two pieces, which I think is pretty darn impressive for her first show in these trying times. It’s really nice to see how her pieces have evolved from her first exhibition for uni, although...

Had my cake, and ate it too.
A delicious blast from the past, I was once mad on Wayne Thiebaud (pronounced Teeeeeeboooooo if you’re my friend’s Anne and Jennie), and photocopied his works throughout high school. Although most famous for his depictions of production line delicacies, he has a few great cityscapes, and the painting directly below, which is quite different from his other works, but which also has a...

Ann Shelton keeps coming back into my life
Circa 2006 web design tutor at uni shows us ann’s website which she has designed, as an example of clean design; agreed. Back then her portfolio of work was much smaller, but when I saw her ‘peephole’ pieces this year at the Auckland Art Fair, I knew I remembered her name from somewhere. And then…I saw these bookshelf photographs, and clicked through to her website. Old...

Dying for Deco
Lately my attention has been drawn to art deco jewellery, especially rings, and these pieces from NZ’s own Meadowlark seen on my latest trip to Wellington really hit the spot. In particular the fabulous “protea” ring, based on a plant form. The New Zealand Jewellery Show is on this weekend, and soon I will be visiting the exhibition of my good friend Anne, who is an up and coming...

Ah ouais!
Why oh why are the French so unashamedly chic? This blog www.garancedore.fr is so fantastic yet made me realise I can never go to sweet Paris, because I will want to cover myself constantly with a paper bag. Maybe the paper bag that all my delicious French pastries came in. Anway, Garance may look so effortlessly cool, smoking her cigarette (which does NOT look dirty or trashy on her, terrible I...
